Martine Aballéa, born in 1950 in New York, is an unclassifiable figure in contemporary art. Her polymorphic artistic practice, initiated in 1975, is built around multiples (postcards, artist books, posters...), as well as objects and installations. Her work brings to life imaginary places and mysterious intrigues, thus creating narratives akin to fairy tales. It is finely articulated between texts and photographic images, which are reproduced and retouched, colorized without naturalism. Images of nature and enhanced settings, where the human figure is always absent, are amplified by the juxtaposition of captions or titles parodying the genres of fantasy literature and noir fiction.
