Dwarf over a Column

Juan MUÑOZ
1988

Juan Muñoz's work revolves around three closely intertwined themes: the stage, actors, and fiction. Space is a recurring concern in Muñoz's interviews and writings. The space he speaks of is not defined by fixed points; rather, it appears to be both a concentration and an extension. It's a space that contains the subject while also being generated, distributed, and contained within the subject itself.

In "Dwarf over a Column," crafted in 1988, Muñoz explores these concepts through a dynamic Baroque twist on a dwarf atop a column. This composition aims to give the object its own scale independent of its size. The sculpture prominently displays its material constitution, establishing a physical proximity to the viewer while imbuing the figure of the dwarf with additional layers of meaning and intensity. Muñoz captures the sculpture's traumatic force, expressing discomfort in the presence of a dwarf and the profound sense of otherness it evokes. The juxtaposition of the column and the dwarf intensifies the contrast between the hierarchical scale of classical values and the marginality associated with the dwarf figure.
