Convolvulus soldanella ou liseron soldanelle entrelacé

Marinette CUECO
1984

Intertwined plants mounted on painted wooden panel, 155 x 177 cm

The *Entrelacs* cycle began very early in the artist's life, in the 1970s. Seeking to find new meaning in tapestry, she had the idea of bringing nature, and its scent, inside homes. She then created these vegetal works of various dimensions and figures, primarily composed of reeds that were collected and worked while still flexible, using multiple techniques to ensure they did not become brittle. The harvesting step in situ is important. "Unlike most artists, she does not buy her materials from a merchant; instead, she knots, braids, knits, weaves, or intertwines them. She does not manufacture them either. She gathers them. (...) Reconnecting with this practice of gathering is, to some extent, rediscovering a gentler, more moderated relationship with the environment in which one lives. (...) At the same time that they are materials for artistic work, the plants remind her of the circumstances of the gathering, interesting details of the landscape, a particular color of the earth or sky. Preserved, then knotted, braided, or knitted, they become an occasion for remembering and dreaming."
