Allen RUPPERSBERG
Allen Ruppersberg was born in 1944 in Cleveland in the United States. He lives and works in New York and Santa Monica.
A key figure in Californian conceptual art, Allen Ruppersberg has pursued an atypical approach since the end of the 1960s that does not favor any particular medium. […]
This heterogeneity suggests a working method articulated around three main operations: the collection of popular and “declassified” cultural forms (including postcards, calendars, books, comics, educational films, records, etc.); the appropriation of these forms and their displacement in the register of art; finally, from one work to another, a partial and fragmentary recycling, in the mode of a permanent work in progress. The result is a series of combinatorial games of texts and images where narrative fragments, intertextuality and reminiscence paint a panorama of the different myths that shape a culture. Ruppersberg emphasizes how individuals internalize these narratives or, to put it in his own words: “We are all, as social beings, collections. »
