herman de vries
herman de vries was born in 1931 in Alkmaar in Holland. He lives and works in Eschenau, Germany.
A naturalist in the 1950s, having participated in the abstraction adventure of the artistic group ZERO in the 1960s, Herman de Vries has devoted himself since the 1970s to the aesthetics of the plant world. He puts his knowledge of plants, their diversity, their medicinal, nutritional or creative virtues at the service of art. During his travels, wanderings and walks in the landscapes, he takes elements of nature from which he creates collages, drawings, photographs and sculptures. He thus wishes to re-teach us to see nature, to contemplate its cycles, to be attentive to the beauty of processes that we tend to neglect and take for granted. It reminds us that man is not separate from nature, but is part of it and dependent on it. The plant world is not only the condition for our survival but also the source of our imagination and our deep roots.
